SDGI Blog: Exploring Reality IV

The final session of Exploring Reality IV was focused on the structure of experimental /non-traditional documentary making including visual storytelling, creative techniques, working with characters, dialogue, character development, use of music, visual effects and how to communicate your vision.

The first session was led by Ken Wardrop, whose films have been screened at many prestigious festivals such as Sundance and Cannes. He is known for his works His & Hers, Making the Grade, and more. He discussed his work on theatrical documentary filmmaking and his upcoming film. Wardrop also highlighted the importance of creating a trailer for a film, and the process of developing a story in a documentary.

Following Wardrop, we learned from renowned documentary filmmaker Marc Isaacs. Issacs has made many creative documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4, and has won various Grierson, Royal Television Society, and BAFTA awards. He spoke about the origin and inspiration of his firm Lift and The Filmmaker’s House, as well as discussed, the process of capturing moments while filming people in a documentary.

The following day, we heard from Tim Samuels, a documentary filmmaker, author, and broadcaster. Samuels’ presenter-led documentaries are broadcast across BBC One and BBC Two – and he is a global correspondent on the National Geographic Channel’s Explorer show. Samuels discussed his background in the news, and his transition into documentary films. He also spoke about his process of highlighting underdogs in his films and the way he approaches duty of care for his characters.

Finally, Sinead O’Shea joined us in the afternoon. O’Shea is a Dublin-based filmmaker and journalist. Her recent documentary Pray for Our Sinners won the Golden Starfish Award at Hamptons International Film Festival and is currently the most attended documentary in Ireland this year. O’Shea spoke with us about her work on the film, and the creative process that led to the final product.
