SDGI Blog: Exploring Reality III

June 7, 2023

Exploring Reality is a Documentary skills series launched by the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland in 2023.

The participants have thus far engaged with modules regarding the development of storytelling, camera and shooting strategies, sound recording processes, and a 2 day module on making a documentary series.

In the latest sessions, the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland joined up with the Screen Composers Guild of Ireland to host a very special Scoring Music for Documentaries Masterclass, where participants learned from internationally known and distinguished composers, Miriam Cutler and Nainita Desai (pictured).

Cutler has a long career in composing for various different film and TV projects, such as RBG (CNN) and Dark Money (PBS). She has also been nominated for three Emmys, among other awards. Nainita Desai is an Emmy & Bafta award-winning composer with some of her notable works include Jerry Rothwell’s “The Reason I Jump” and “Netflix’s American Murder”

This module focused on the practicalities of working as a composer within documentary film, contracts, timelines and negotiating with directors and producers from the outset. Cutler and Desai both spoke about the power of the film score to propel and underline the films message and stay authentic to the story being told and also discussed ways that directors and composers must communicate to articulate the director’s vision for the film.

June kicked off with the business side of making documentary. Alan Maher (Cowtown Pictures) was joined by Nell Roddy (Breakout Pictures) and took our directors through the roll of the producer and the distributor in getting films to market and festival.

This was followed by a masterclass from director Keith Walsh who shared his insights and experience in editing in non-narrative documentary filmmaking.
