Frank Delaney is an award-winning screen director with more than 30 years of filmmaking experience across Ireland, the UK, Europe, North America, and beyond. Throughout his career, he has directed and produced over 140 productions for many of the world’s leading broadcasters and platforms, including National Geographic, Netflix, Amazon, BBC, CNN, PBS, MTV, RTÉ, TG4, and numerous international networks.
Working across every area of factual filmmaking, Frank’s experience spans high-end documentaries, specialist factual programming, formatted television series, observational documentaries, and international co-productions. He has collaborated with broadcasters throughout Europe, the United States, the UK, and Ireland, developing a reputation for creating compelling, audience-focused storytelling across a broad range of genres.
His directing credits include acclaimed productions such as Great Lighthouses of Ireland (RTÉ), In Good Hands (RTÉ), Dessie: Glór na Bo Finne (TG4), Tracks and Trails (RTE), Waking the Titanic (TG4/CBC Canada), Explorer’s Journal (National Geographic), and Lonely Planet (Discovery), among many others.
Based between Belfast and Dublin, Frank is increasingly focused on supporting the development of an all-island screen industry. He serves as a Board Member of the Royal Television Society Northern Ireland and has acted as a strategic advisor to Northern Ireland Screen on education and skills policy, helping to shape opportunities for emerging film and television professionals. Frank has also established a distinguished academic career, successfully building and leading media and broadcast programmes at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. At Queen’s University Belfast, he has developed new educational pathways in media and broadcast production and is engaged in research that explores emerging models of production, creative practice, and innovation within the Irish and international film and television sectors.
A longstanding advocate for directors’ rights, Frank has been actively involved in industry representation and policy development. In 2019, he led the development of a Creative Rights framework for the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland, working in consultation with Directors UK and the Federation of European Screen Directors (FERA). The initiative was designed specifically to strengthen creative rights protections for factual and documentary directors working in Ireland.
Today, Frank divides his time between directing feature documentaries and factual television series, and contributing to research, education, and industry development initiatives across Ireland. Through his work with organisations including the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland, Northern Ireland Screen, and the Royal Television Society, he remains committed to advancing the creative, professional, and economic development of the Irish film and television sector.
