Charlie McCarthy began his directing career in RTE where he directed a wide range of programmes from Glenroe to Nighthawks. Since going freelance he has directed both documentary and drama.  The former has included much-praised portraits of writers Seamus Heaney, John Banville, Edna O’Brien, Hugh Leonard and Colum McCann; the latter has included dramas such as Pure Mule, Single-Handed, Legend, On Home Ground, The Clinic, Raw and Jack Taylor. He wrote and directed the television feature Home For Christmas ( 5 IFTA Nominations, 1 win) and has written a number of prize-winning radio plays.
