Alan Hopkins is a Dublin-based screenwriter, director, and founder of HAL Pictures. His work focuses on telling stories from the margins of society, often exploring themes of social justice, identity, and the lived experiences of those outside the mainstream.
In 2024, Alan wrote and directed Ogham, a short film produced through Screen Ireland’s Focus Shorts scheme. The film premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Galway Film Fleadh, had its Dublin premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival, and will make its UK premiere at the BIFA-qualifying Beeston Film Festival. It continues to screen internationally across three continents through 2025.
Alan’s previous film, Jungle (2022), centered on the European refugee crisis and premiered at the IndieCork International Film Festival. It received international recognition, including an honorable mention at the Out of Bounds Festival in Italy. His debut short, Williton’s Way, also enjoyed a successful festival run both in Ireland and abroad.
Alan holds a BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production from The National Film School at Dun Laoghaire IADT and has graduated with a Master’s Degree in Screenwriting from the same institution. He has also experience as a cinematographer, contributing to Irish shorts such as 69 & Dead and The Beauty of Ballybrack, both of which were showcased at the Galway Film Fleadh and featured on RTÉ’s Shortscreen slot.
In 2025, Alan was selected for the Screen Ireland Mentorship Programme, where he is currently shadowing writer-director Frank Berry. He is also participating in the Storyhouse Lab and is developing two feature projects that continue his exploration of socially conscious storytelling.
