Alan Dunne is a Shooting Director/Producer and Cinematographer from Dublin with a particular
interest in unusual stories and characters. Alan has a strong interest in social media, science,
crime, comedy and is always up to date with current events worldwide, experience he brought to
Newstalk as a creative videographer, organizing and shooting short documentaries on topics
ranging from politics to human interest.
Starting out during college, Alan took any opportunity he could get to learn the industry and
began working In RTE and TG4. Alan worked his way up, starting as a runner and then
assistant editor before becoming a production coordinator and audience coordinator for Adare
Productions and Caboom, Ireland. He worked on many shows for RTE and TG4 such as
Brendan O’Connor’s Cutting Edge, The Mario Rosenstock Show, Junior Eurovision, Living With
Lucy, An Jig Gig, Glas Vegas and Feis & Blood.
As a Writer and Director for film, Alan won the “Film In Cork Short Script Award” in 2017 for his
script “Earthly Bonds” where, alongside a 10,000 Euro grant, he was mentored by Screen
Ireland’s Steven Davenport, Writer/Director Oonagh Kearney and Michael Kinirons. The film
stars Peter Coonan and had its premiere at the Cork Film Festival in late 2017 going on to win
awards, playing at festivals around the world (link to the film at bottom of cv) and aired on RTE
as part of the 2021 Shortscreen Programme.
In 2020 his script “Where It All Began” came second in the Film Offaly Script Competition and
was shortlisted in 2021 again for the Kildare ShortGrass Fund. It placed second and was
awarded a small grant. This film is now in festivals and stars Lalor Roddy and
introduces trans actor Laylah Beattie in her first film role.
In 2022 his script “Sleeping Dogs” was shortlisted for the Waterford Script Competition.
In 2023, his latest script “Aretha & Andriy’s Unbreakable Friendship” was also shortlisted for the
DLR First Frames Award, SDCC Film Award and the Offaly Film Grant.
His latest short film “Family Night” premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh,
was one of only two Irish shorts selected for the prestigious SITGES festival and won best film
at the Underground Cinema Film Festival in Dun Laoghaire, in 2022. The film is currently being
represented by The Green Ray Film Agency and has played on nearly every continent at major
festivals, picking up many awards and nominations along the way.
