Richard Keane is an award-winning filmmaker specialising in both animation and live-action as a writer, director, and producer. With a career spanning over two decades, Richard has worked at several high-profile studios in Ireland and the UK on numerous acclaimed projects for clients such as Amazon Studios, BBC, Disney Junior, Nickelodeon, RTÉ, and Screen Ireland.

Richard’s animation career includes over 12 years at Brown Bag Films, where he contributed to BAFTA, Emmy, and IFTA award-winning productions broadcast in more than 200 territories worldwide. His notable directing credits include Disney Junior’s Peabody Award-winning series Doc McStuffins and Nickelodeon’s Butterbean’s Café, the latter achieving the highest ratings for a new Nickelodeon series in five years. In 2012, Richard wrote, directed, and edited the award-winning animated short Bird Food, funded by Screen Ireland and produced by Brown Bag Films. The film screened at over 50 festivals globally and is used in schools across the UK to teach storytelling techniques.

In live-action, Richard has written, directed, and produced several acclaimed short films, including Perpetual Darkness (2007), The Grand Canal (2016), Time Slips Away (2019), and Chicken Out (2021). His work has been screened at major film festivals worldwide, with Chicken Out winning several awards and currently screening on Disney+.

In 2015, Richard founded Out Left Productions, a boutique production company producing high-end animation and live-action projects. Its first production was that same year, with Richard producing and co-writing the short film Hot Knives, which was selected as part of RTÉ’s Storyland series. Since then, Richard has been developing multiple animation and live-action projects, ranging from short films and TV series to feature films.

Among his recent achievements is an episode of RTÉ Jr’s animated series Herstory (2019), focusing on Irish trailblazer Máire Ní Chinnéide and voiced by Amy Huberman. Richard continues to expand his portfolio, including his latest animated short film, Scrap Metal, currently in production.

In addition to filmmaking, Richard was the creative director and story consultant for the children’s book series Not Just a Princess. He is also a trained improviser, having performed for over six years with troupes across the UK. In 2013, he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with the improv troupe Mondo Bizarro, selling out all five shows.
