Maurice Sweeney is an award winning director as comfortable producing full scale drama as he is in documentary where he has pushed the boundaries of the drama doc genre. He has a number of large scale credits where he has developed a proven eye and ear for story and emotion.
His most recent work includes Lead Director on Blood – Season 2. It made Empire Magazine’s best TV of 2020 list. He directed the three-part drama Penance for Channel 5. It was one of the channel’s highest viewed dramas of 2020.
He directed and co-wrote the critically acclaimed and award winning Feature Documentary I, Dolours. It was released in cinemas and went on to be acquired by Netflix.
Over his twenty year career, Maurice has worked on numerous international co-productions, and has credits with HISTORY US, BBC, ZDF, ARTE, FIVE and RTE. Maurice has been a board member of the Irish Film Board and of the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland. Maurice has won 5 Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) and was awarded Best Director at the London Independent Film Festival.
