The Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) is launching a series of podcasts which is now available free of charge on iTunes and the SDGI website.
The podcasts have been recorded at the events run by the SDGI on a regular basis. The events, which are exclusive to members of the organisation, bring Directors and other professionals of the audio-visual industry together to discuss their own work, their favourite films, and bring other art forms and mediums into the mix.
Some of the speakers include Directors John Carney (Once), Paddy Breathnach (I Went Down), Conor McPherson (The Eclipse), as well Production Designer Tom Conroy (The Tudors) and Cinematographer Tim Fleming (The Door).
“After our events launch with Neil Jordan in October last we realised the wonderful content that was being created when directors get together to discuss this work and we knew it was too good not to share it with a greater audience. We are thrilled with the quality of our podcasts.” said Birch Hamilton, Executive Director of the SDGI.
The next SDGI podcast will be dialogue with Sir Alan Parker (Angela’s Ashes, The Commitments) and Michael Apted (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Gorillas In The Mist). The event is exclusive for members of the SDGI but the masterclass podcast will be available online for the general public in October.
Shimmy Marcus will present his soon-to-be-released ‘SoulBoy’ on 23rd August at 7pm in the SDGI Screening Room.
Synopsis:
Amidst power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the football terraces, Joe McCain (Martin Compston), is bored of a life that’s going nowhere. Enter hair-dresser Jane (Nichola Burley). Blonde, brassy, and moving to the beat of a whole new world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino – the home of Northern Soul. Mandy (Felicity Jones), a cute and spunky artist, is eager to help Joe become the cool “soul boy” he wants to be. Mandy falls for Joe and a love triangle develops with Jane and Mandy, and Joe has to decide who he really wants in his life.

DIRECTORS CLUB: Paddy Breathnach presents ‘I Went Down’ (1997) in conversation with Kieron J. Walsh
15 Mar 2010
“A funny, brilliantly-paced, complex but totally accessible, mature and highly entertaining mobster movie, set in Ireland but undistracted by the usual feeble efforts to explain in passing the essential nature of Irishness. ‘I Went Down’ has jettisoned that kind of dubious ambition, and is all the better for it.” Gerry McCarthy – Film Ireland 61 (Oct/Nov 1997)
